以when, where, what, which, who, how much/many等疑问词引出的问题。
3.以“According to ...”
The biggest challenge for most mothers is from ________.
如把lose one's job换成了be out of work。
…
I found the pre holidays a good time to encourage young children to donate less used things, and it worked. Because of our efforts, our daughter Georgia did decide to donate a large bag of toys to a little girl whose mother was unable to pay for her holiday due to illness. She chose to sell a few larger objects that were less often used when we promised to put the money into her school fund (基金) (our kindergarten daughter is serious about becoming a doctor).
…
33.What made Georgia agree to sell some of her objects
A.Saving up for her holiday.
B.Raising money for a poor girl.
C.Adding the money to her fund.
D.Giving the money to a sick mother.
Georgia, sell, objects
锁信息 定位:用Georgia, sell, objects寻读,在文中找到信息源——She chose to sell a few larger objects that were less often used when we promised to put the money into her school fund (基金) (our kindergarten daughter is serious about becoming a doctor).
Of the common berries, strawberries are highest in vitamin C, although, because of their seeds, raspberries contain a little more protein (蛋白质), iron and zinc (not that fruits have much protein). Blueberries are particularly high in antioxidants The yellow and orange stone fruits such as peaches are high in the carotenoids we turn into vitamin A and which are antioxidants. As for cherries (樱桃), they are so delicious who cares However, they are rich in vitamin C.
…
24.What does the author seem to like about cherries
A.They contain protein.
B.They are high in vitamin A.
C.They have a pleasant taste.
D.They are rich in antioxidants.
锁信息 定位:用cherries寻读,在文中找到信息源——As for cherries (樱桃), they are so delicious who cares However, they are rich in vitamin C.
[分析] 选C 根据该段最后一句“As for cherries (樱桃), they are so delicious who cares However, they are rich in vitamin C.”可知,原文中的they are so delicious被替换成选项中的They have a pleasant taste,为间接细节理解题。
At present, the world has about 6,800 languages. The distribution of these languages is hugely uneven. The general rule is that mild zones have relatively few languages, often spoken by many people, while hot, wet zones have lots, often spoken by small numbers. Europe has only around 200 languages; the Americas about 1,000; Africa 2,400; and Asia and the Pacific perhaps 3,200, of which Papua New Guinea alone accounts for well over 800. The median number (中位数) of speakers is a mere 6,000, which means that half the world's languages are spoken by fewer people than that.
…
30.How many languages are spoken by less than 6,000 people at present
A.About 6,800. B.About 3,400.
C.About 2,400. D.About 1,200.
锁信息 定位:用6,000寻读,在文中找到信息源——The median number (中位数) of speakers is a mere 6,000, which means that half the world's languages are spoken by fewer people than that.
A 大约6 800种。
[分析] 选B 根据本段第一句“At present, the world has about 6,800 languages.”可知,目前世界上有大约6 800种语言;再根据最后一句“The median number (中位数) of speakers is a mere 6,000, which means that half the world's languages are spoken by fewer people than that.”
Food festivals around the world
Stilton Cheese Rolling
May Day is a traditional day for celebrations, but the 2,000 English villagers of Stilton must be the only people in the world who include cheese rolling in their annual plans. Teams of four, dressed in a variety of strange and funny clothes, roll a complete cheese along a 50 metre course. On the way, they must not kick or throw their cheese, or go into their competitors' lane (赛道).Competition is fierce and the chief prize is a complete Stilton cheese weighing about four kilos (disappointingly, but understandably the cheeses used in the race are wooden ones). All the competitors are served with beer or port wine, the traditional accompaniment for Stilton cheese.
Fiery Foods Festival — The Hottest Festival on Earth
Every year more than 10,000 people head for the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico. They come from as far away as Australia, the Caribbean and China, but they all share a common addiction — food that is not just spicy (辛辣), but hot enough to make your mouth burn, your head spin and your eyes water. Their destination is the Fiery Food and BBQ Festival which is held over a period of three days every March. You might like to try a chocolate covered habanero pepper — officially the hottest pepper in the world — or any one of the thousands of products that are on show. But one thing's for sure — if you don't like the feeling of a burning tongue, this festival isn't for you!
La Tomatina — The World's Biggest Food Fight
On the last Wednesday of every August, the Spanish town of Bu ol hosts La Tomatina — the world's largest food fight. A week long celebration leads up to an exciting tomato battle as the highlight of the week's events. The early morning sees the arrival of large trucks with tomatoes — official fight starters get things going by casting tomatoes at the crowd.
…
59.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage
A.The chief prize for the Stilton cheese rolling competition is beer or port wine.
B.More than 10,000 Chinese take part in the Fiery Food and BBQ Festival.

Scottish Storytelling Centre, Edinburgh
The Centre’s ethos(价值观)is summed up nicely by the old Scottish proverb, “The story is told eye to eye, mind to mind and heart to heart.” The main draw is its programme of spoken- word performances, most of which take place in its 100- seat basement theatre. The storytelling does not just happen on stage, though. The ground floor has a large airy room used for exhibitions, workshops as well as a monthly story session for tots (Tiny Tales for one-to-three-year-olds).
Exit through the gift shop
No gift shop! Better than that, the centre has an independent bookshop, which specialises in myths and folk stories. Many are classics passed down from generation to generation , although contemporary material also abounds(大量存在). Kids’ books are plentiful. Contemporary highlights include Lari Don’s Serpents and Werewovles and Janis Mackay’s The Selkie Girl. Also worth a look is Animals, Beasties and Monsters of Scotland by Lea Taylor, which forms part of The History Press’s superb compilation(编纂) of regional Scottish folk stories. There are also Scots’ versions of Harry Potter, as well as Roald Dahl’s The Twins.
Getting there
The centre is in the middle of Edinburgh’s Old Town,at the eastern end of the Royal Mile. It is a five- minute walk from Waverley railway station. Driving in the city centre is to be avoided; the nearest bus stops are on the High Street and North Bridge. For more information, visit Lothian Buses.
Value for money
Reasonable. Entry to the ground-floor space is free, although all the theatre performances are ticketed. Prices for shows vary, with the average around£8 for adults and£6 for children. Cafe Voices, the centre's monthly storytelling night ,is£5.
Opening hours
10 am-6 pm from Mondays to Saturdays; Sunday (July and August only). Last entry: 5:30 pm.
1. What can visitors do in the shop at the exit
A. Enjoy classics.
B. Exchange folk stories
C. Meet contemporary writers.
D. Talk about Harry Potter in Scots.
2. What can be learned about transportation to the centre
A. Public transportation is advised.
B. Self-driving is encouraged in the city centre.
C. Round-trip transportation is provided by the centre.
D. The nearest bus stop is next to Waverley railway station.
3. If you want to visit the centre, when should you arrive
A. Before 10 am. B. Before 8 am.

四
Sonoma County is adding artificial intelligence to its wildfire fighting. The county has entered into an agreement with the South Korean firm Alchera to equip its network of fire-spotting cameras with software that detects wildfire activity and then issues a warning to authorities.
The technology examines past and current images of terrain (地形;地势) and searches for certain changes, such as flames burning in darkness, said Chris Godley, the county’s director of emergency management. But emergency workers will first have to“teach”the system to distinguish between images that show fire smoke, and others that might show clouds, fog etc. The software will use feedback from humans to improve its algorithm(算法) and will eventually be able to detect fires on its own — or at least that’s what county officials hope.
“It’s kind of like learning how to read,” Godley said. “What letters can I put together to make up a word ” The county activated the technology Wednesday and received 16 positive reports of smoke — all of which turned out to be permitted burns, he said. Once a seasonal ban on controlled burns goes into effect in April or May, the county plans to speed up the testing and feedback phase. The hope is that by November, the system will no longer need to be taught and can start providing reliable intelligence. Godley said. “It’s going to take us a while to make sure we get the bugs out and that we really can depend on it because ultimately this is a lifesaving mission.”
The technology is intended to help officials investigate potential fire starts earlier so they can get personnel out to them more quickly and issue necessary warnings. Officials expect other places will adopt it if the technology is successful, particularly because it plugs into the camera network that’s already in place statewide.
“We ultimately believe its potential could be realized in a year or two,” Godley said. “And it could really have a dramatic impact here in California.”
12. What does the system first have to do before being put into work
A. Equip its network of fire-spotting cameras with software.
B. Learn to tell between images of fire smoke and other pictures.
C. Use feedbacks to improve its ability to detect fire independently.
D. Examine images of the terrain and search for any possible changes.
13. What do local officials expect the technology to accomplish
A. Be able to make positive reports of smoke.
B. Be able to control seasonal burns in the area.
C. Help them spot potential fire starts as soon as possible.
D. Learn how to distinguish pictures of flames from clouds.
14. What does the underlined part in paragraph 3 mean
A. kill all the bugs. B. get rid of mistakes
C. provide reliable information D. speed up testing process
15. What does the author mainly intend to tell us
A. AI is creating a dramatic impact in California.
B. AI is applied to monitor terrains in California.
C. A new tool to help detect wildfire in California.
D. A new way to put an end to wildfire in California.
根据第二段的“But emergency workers will first have to“teach”the system to distinguish between images that show fire smoke, and others that might show clouds, fog etc.( 但应急救援人员首先必须“教”该系统来区分显示火灾烟雾的图像和其他可能显示云、雾等的图像)”可知,这个系统在投入工作之前必须学会区分火灾烟雾的图像和其他图像。
根据第三段的“The hope is that by November, the system will no longer need to be taught and can start providing reliable intelligence(希望到11月,该系统将不再需要教授,并可以开始提供可靠的情报)”以及倒数第二段的“The technology is intended to help officials investigate potential fire starts earlier so they can get personnel out to them more quickly and issue necessary warnings.( 这项技术旨在帮助官员更早调查潜在的火灾,这样,他们就可以更快地通知工作人员,并发出必要的警告。)”
上文“The hope is that by November, the system will no longer need to be taught and can start providing reliable intelligence.( 希望到11月,该系统将不再需要教授,并可以开始提供可靠的情报),可知,人们期待该系统提供可靠的情报,结合Godley说的“It’s going to take us a while to make sure we get the bugs out and that we really can depend on it because ultimately this is a lifesaving mission.( 我们需要一段时间来确保我们get the bugs out,而且我们真的可以依靠它,因为最终这是一项拯救生命的任务。)”中的it指代上文提到的“the system”可推断,人们希望能够依靠这个系统提供可靠的情报,说明人们需要时间才能确保排除错误,这样就可以减少排除错误的时间,因此划线部分意思是“排除错误”。故选B。
15【答案】C主旨大意题。通读全文可知,第一段点明了主题,根据第一段内容“Sonoma County is adding artificial intelligence to its wildfire fighting. The county has entered into an agreement with the South Korean firm Alchera to equip its network of fire-spotting cameras with software that detects wildfire activity and then issues a warning to authorities.( 索诺玛县正在增加人工智能到野火战斗中,该县已与韩国阿尔切拉公司达成协议,为其火灾探测摄像头网络配备检测野火活动的软件,然后向当局发出警告)”可知,文章主要介绍了在加利福尼亚,一个新的工具被用来帮助探测野火,与野火作斗争。故选C。
五
Each generation -- from Baby Boomers to Generation X to Millennials -- has its own set of values and characteristics. But one thing common to all generations is that they are suffering from stress. In a recent poll by the American Psychological Association (APA), all age groups now report higher levels of stress than in the past. Baby Boomers (those born roughly between 1946 and 1964, and who are now moving into their retirement years) said that they are stressed about earnings and health issues. Gen Xers (born roughly between 1965 and 1980) are concerned about work, income, and job stability. However, Millennials (born roughly between 1981 and 2004) are turning out to be the most stressed-out of all the generations. Poll results indicate that stress levels for these younger respondents are significantly above average. So what’s worrying the Millennials
Millennials are the first generation to grow up with computers in the home and the classroom. Due to the rise of modern technology and social media, they are constantly showered with information. Over time, this information overload can become too much to handle and can result in stress, which in turn can cause serious physical, psychological, and emotional problems. Another contributing factor, according to author Michael D. Hais, is that many Millennials have lived sheltered lives due to overprotective parents. These young adults lack problem-solving skills and may struggle with fear of failure once they leave home. Making matters worse, the 2008 economic depression occurred when many Millennials were graduating from high school or college. The resulting economic slowdown reduced the number of available jobs for graduates. Sure enough, in the APA poll, Millennials said that work, money, relationships, family responsibilities, and the economy are the main stressors in their lives.
However, the poll results may be a bit misleading as they don’t take into account public attitudes toward stress and mental illness. Ronald Kessler of Harvard Medical School, who has studied the prevalence (流行) of mental disorders in the U.S., points out that changes in social attitudes have helped reduce the stigma attached to mental illness over the years. For example, the creation of health-related television programming and specialty magazines such as Psychology Today have contributed to greater public awareness of mental health issues. According to psychologists, younger people now are more willing to admit to them that they are under stress than in the past. “There is not a lot of evidence of true prevalence having gone up,” Kessler says. “It looks like younger people are in worse shape, but unfortunately, we just don’t know.”
56. It can be learned from the results of the APA poll that ______.
A. All age groups are experiencing more stress than before.
B. Millennials have more stress than before, but other age groups aren’t.
C. Compared with other age groups, Millennials have more overprotective parents.
D. Stress levels are down for all age groups, but they’re down the most for Millennials.
57. ______ is a cause of worry across all generations.
A. Health. B. Occupation. C. Money. D. Weak economy.
58. What’s the possible meaning of the underlined word “stigma” in the last paragraph
A. Behavior. B. Shame. C. Symptom. D. Complexity.

Becoming a real runner
I would never use the word “athletic” to describe myself. To me, athletes are people who really enjoy working out. I remember crying in middle school when I had to run a mile during gym class. I huffed and puffed as I jogged. As I grew up, I would go to the gym, but I never enjoyed working out. That, I thought, was for real runners.
In June 2017, my friend sent me an email that would forever change my attitude towards running. He was training for a 200-mile relay (接力赛) and wanted me to be on his team. I would run three legs between four and six miles each over the course of two days. Figuring that I would never again have the chance to work with some top runners, I immediately agreed, and started running outside to prepare.
That first run was hard. I purposefully avoided Central Park in order to stay away from real runners. After a few blocks, I was already winded, and ran the rest of the way home. I called my mom, choked up, to say I had no hope at all of running this relay. But she encouraged me to keep at it, so I didn't quit. I went from running four miles a week to eight within one month before my advanced training began.
I was frightened going into the first training session with the team as everyone else was super “athletic”. We ran for five miles, and I was significantly slower. However, my teammates were so supportive that I felt the runner’s high, which I had never believed existed.
One day, about two weeks into training, my ankle gave out while I was running in Central Park. I was diagnosed with a stress fracture The doctor told me to stop running for two months. It took me a while to face the fact that I was out of the race. My doctor told me that he too had once been struck down with a stress fracture, and the following year, he beat his best running time in a half-marathon. That brought me hope.
I made it through the next two months by picturing myself running again. Just yesterday, for the first time since that fateful day, I took my outdoor run with my physical therapist. I mentioned that I might run a half-marathon the next year. Now I wake up excited for the days I get to run. Maybe I am a “real runner” after all.
56. According to the article, when did the author start to feel passion for running
A. After she got into the habit of working out.
B. After she got the courage to run outdoors on her own.
C. After she ran with some top runners and got their encouragement.
D. After she broke her ankle in training and stayed in bed for two months.
57. The underlined word in the passage refers to her doctor’s _________.
A. helpful advice.
B. immediate treatment.
C. experience in the marathon.
D. personal experience with an injury.
58. What can we infer from the article about the author
A. She didn’t take the relay seriously.
B. She had a strict and overprotective mother.
C. She felt disappointed about withdrawing from the race.
D. She would have expected to run a half-marathon if she had won the race.
59. The author’s purpose of writing the article was to _________.
A. urge readers to exercise regularly.
B. share with readers the fun of running.
C. warn readers to be careful about running.
D. encourage readers to pursue their hobbies.
由第四段“I was frightened going into the first training session with the team as everyone else was super “athletic”. We ran for five miles, and I was significantly slower. However, my teammates were so supportive that I felt the runner’s high, which I had never believed existed.”(我很害怕和队员一起参加第一次训练,因为其他人都是超级“运动员”。
由倒数第二段中的“I was diagnosed with a stress fracture (应力性骨折). The doctor told me to stop running for two months. It took me a while to face the fact that I was out of the race. My doctor told me that he too had once been struck down with a stress fracture, and the following year, he beat his best running time in a half-marathon. That brought me hope.”(我被诊断为应力性骨折。
由倒数第二段中的“It took me a while to face the fact that I was out of the race.”(我花了一段时间才面对自己被淘汰的事实。)

Some of the wonderful snorkeling(浮潜) in the world can be found in the clear shallow waters of the Bahamas. Anyone who has ever snorkeled here will confirm that the Bahamas is an excellent option.
New Providence Island
It is the most popular tourist destination in the Bahamas. The waters that surround the island are filled with exotic fish, colorful reefs, sea gardens, and underwater wrecks. Snorkelers and more certified divers can explore the many shipwrecks(沉船) that are scattered throughout the nation. Interestingly, not all of the shipwrecks were caused by Mother Nature; some ships were purposely sunk to create artificial reefs.
Grand Bahama Island
As another popular vacation spot, it is also an excellent place for snorkeling. The island’s waters are rich in marine life and coral beds. Many snorkelers enjoy exploring the island’s Shark Junction, a place where reef sharks, nurse sharks, eels, and stingrays are plentiful. Others head for Lucayan Caverns. At more than six miles long, it is one of the longest underwater cave systems in the world and part of Grand Bahama’s Lucayan National Park.
The Abaco Islands
Composed of two main islands and numerous cays, they offer some of the best shallow water snorkeling in Bahamas.Colorful coral reefs extend for miles and begin at a depth of just five feet. They are teeming with a wide variety of fish as well as eels, stingrays, turtles, and dolphins. Abaco’s Walker’s Cay is known for its “Shark Rodeo” where divers can view hundreds of non-aggressive sharks.
Thunderball Grotto
Located in the Exuma Island chain, it is a beautiful cave that is popular with snorkelers. Its claim to fame is that it was used as a location for filming several movies including two featuring James Bond. Snorkelers can access the cave during low tide and are able to swim with grouper, snapper, angelfish, lobsters and the occasional sea turtle.
